How to Create Your Own Christmas Tree Paper Cones

Perfect for gift-wrapping, holding party favors or stashing special treats, Christmas tree paper cones are a simple DIY project that you'll love making - and that people love receiving. With just a few supplies and a splash of creativity, you can make your own paper cones this holiday season.

Here's what you need to create show-stopping Christmas tree paper cones:

  • Card stock
  • Craft glue stick
  • Double-sided tape
  • Stapler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon and other embellishments

For the card stock, you can choose a Christmas- or holiday-themed print or solid red, green or white card stock. The same goes for tissue paper, too. To create even more visual appeal, choose a themed print for one and a solid color for the other. For example, if you choose card stock emblazoned with tiny Christmas trees, choose red, white or green tissue paper (or vice-versa). Remember that you can embellish the card stock after you've created the cone, too, so solid colors for both is also a great idea.

Follow these instructions to create gorgeous Christmas tree paper cones for your friends and family.

1. Cut the Card Stock

You can print out a cone template and apply it to your card stock. Usually, you can get a cone with a 7.5-inch radius from a letter-sized piece of card stock. Each piece should feature one sharp angle, like a triangle, and opposite that, an arced line - a little like a triangle with a rounded bottom.

2. Roll the Cone

Roll the cone to a point at one end. The corner of the paper - the one with the right angle - will form the point, and the rounded side will form the open top of the cone. Press firmly to shape the cone, but not firmly enough to create ridges or creases.

Open the cone to complete the next step.

3. Attach the Tape

Attach small strips of double-sided tape to the outer edge of the cone, near the top. This is where you'll attach tissue paper. Cover as much of the arc as possible. Remove the backing from the tape so the second sticky side is exposed.

Pro tip: Attach both ends of the tissue paper before you start attaching the middle. That way, you'll be sure to have enough as you pleat it through the center.

4. Tape and Staple the Cone

Fold back the tissue paper and apply a strip of double-sided tape to one side of the open cone. Roll the cone together, starting with the pointed end, and press the two edges together firmly. The tissue paper should be hanging over the outside of the cone on all sides.

Staple the overlapped edge of the cone at the top to secure it in place.

5. Embellish the Cone (optional)

Add embellishments to the card stock. Whether you choose textured stickers, glitter or holiday-themed decor, the important thing is to wait to embellish it until you've shaped and secured the cone.

Christmas tree paper cones are perfect for the holidays. They make great additions to place settings or as small treat containers for kids.
